I Called This One, Miley

egoPeople are self-centered – in general. And don’t worry, I include myself in this description. As humans, I think we tend to look for representations of ourselves in the lives of others, in the music we listen to, in the books we read, everywhere. It’s validation that we are normal, that what we do and who we are, is perfectly OK, that we are not psychos.

In a way, I believe it’s natural. A person has to be self-centered to a certain extent in order to survive. We have to be able to reflect. For example, if I wore a really low cut dress and a pair of seven-inch clear heels to the grocery store and the meat guy asked me how much I was charging – and I DIDN’T like being thought of as a prostitute – then I might consider rethinking my wardrobe.

One must examine and re-examine who they are and how they behave on a regular basis in order to have the best life possible. Sure, some people may go a little overboard, but then we just say, “Hey, Paris Hilton. You are really no better than the rest of us. Stop it with the clothes and the little dog and the doing nothing all the damn time, and get a real job already.”

Also, if you pay attention, there are signs and signals that every person sends out to the world that suggests what is going on with them. Writers do it. They expound upon their own realities, exaggerated though they may be. (Seriously, have you read my book – The Albatross and the Mermaid? I’ll let you draw your own conclusions about that one. Warning: it’s rate M for mature.) Artists do it – they put on canvas what is going on in their heads and in their hearts.

And then there is Miley. Yes, Miley Cyrus. Just for the record, I predicted this over a month ago, and I don’t even know that much about her.

If I remember correctly, it happenedĀ  while I was driving in the car with my children – which is where I usually am – and her song “We Can’t Stop” came on the radio. It’s hard NOT to know that song. You’d have to be living under a rock to have missed it.

Anyway, after listening to it for a minute or two, I said, “Miley must be dating a black guy.”

Miley Cyrus and Mike WiLL Made It. Ummm yeah, strange name. And that IS a Jamaica flag on his shirt. Source: dailymail.co.uk.

“She’s not,” said my daughter. (She loves to correct me.) “She’s engaged to Liam Hemsworth.” At the time, Miley still was.

“OK, but something is going on. There must be somebody important in her life who is not white.” The evidence? Her lyrics: “We run tings, tings no run we.” I know this saying very well. I had it engraved on a necklace for my husband when he passed his licensing exam for medicine. It is a Jamaican saying and it means, “We run things. Things don’t run us.” I know, hard to figure out. ;)

Add to that they fact that Miley’s video/song is so overtly sexual. It’s like she’s screaming, “Hey world, I’m having some pretty x-rated sex with somebody, and maybe…just maybe…he wears a ball cap and gold chains, and he’s the opposite of my father in every way you can imagine.”

“Whatever Mom. You’re crazy,” my daughter replied when I made my proclamation. As I hear this comment a lot, I don’t take offense. I’m used to it by now. Besides, the things I say usually turn out to be true. That’s how I get my payback.

And wouldn’t you know it, they did. Now, Miley is apparently dating her producer who – surprise, surprise – is of the darker persuasion. I’ll bet anything that this little love fest has been simmering for a while. It’s probably why she and Liam broke up in the first place.

Yes sirree, it takes a white girl who is already with a black guy and who recognizes some of their cultural sayings, to know that another white girl is dating a black guy because she is using those same sayings in her music – nothing bad or racial or anything like that intended here. It’s just a fact.

I’ve got my eyes (and ears) on you, Miley. I’ll probably know you are pregnant before you do.
